Kuruthi

’ is heading to release in a week. The upcoming film is touted to be a socio-political thriller and is helmed by Manu Warrier. The film also marks Manu’s debut in Mollywood. The young director has earlier delivered a Bollywood film ‘Coffee Bloom’ which had Arjun Mathur in the lead. Manu Warrier has also scripted for Anurag Kashyap’s 2014 series Yudh starring Amitabh Bachchan.

“I was intrigued by Anish Pallyal’s script,” Manu Warrier said to ETimes, during the trailer launch of ‘Kuruthi’.

“I was in the middle of putting together a Hindi project when Anish (scriptwriter) asked me to take a look at the script of 'Kuruthi'. We have worked together on multiple projects, and he emailed me the script of ‘Kuruthi’ for feedback. I started reading and I was like wow! I was wowed by the script and quite sold on! It was a script that would excite a filmmaker right away and compel him to go ahead and make it,” Manu Warrier said, recalling how ‘Kuruthi’ happened.

Although Manu Warrier is based in Mumbai and has worked on Bollywood projects, he is no stranger to Malayalam cinema as he grew up watching Malayalam movies. “I belong to the generation of Malayalis who enjoyed watching VCR gifted by uncles who worked in the gulf! My relatives used to bring a lot of videotapes and I remember watching a lot of Malayalam movies. So, I did not have any aversion to making a Malayalam film. The story excited me a lot and I thought, why not we go ahead and make it in Malayalam. Although I am not affluent in the language, I had this amazing team to support me,” the director shared.

Supriya Menon of

Prithviraj Productions

is backing the film and when asked about what were the perks of working with the banner, Manu Warrier said, “I remember when I first sent the script to Prithvi, I was in talks with another producer. Once

Prithvi

completed reading the script, he shared his feedback and also expressed his interest in producing the film. I thought, why not? Because, this was the perfect backing the script could get, compared to any other producer doing it. The banner's experience helped us save a lot of time and the film was finished ahead of schedule. It was great that they came on board.”

The film is packed with action sequences, and most of them were filmed at Kottayam’s Eerattupetta.

Meanwhile, ‘Kuruthi’ is slated as an Onam release, August 11. The film will be directly released on an

OTT

platform.
