Dhyan Sreenivasan has scored his first box office success of the year with ‘Detective Ujjwalan’, a lighthearted crime thriller that has quietly charmed audiences.
According to the Sacnilk website reports, the film has collected Rs 4.02 crores worldwide at the end of its first week, with Rs 3.59 crores coming from the India net collections.
Modest day-wise growth
‘Detective Ujjwalan’ opened with Rs 69 lakhs on its first day and maintained steady footing across the week. Day two brought in Rs 78 lakhs, followed by a slight jump to Rs 85 lakhs on day three, showing a weekend uplift.
However, weekday figures were more modest, with Rs 30 lakhs on day four, Rs 50 lakhs on day five, Rs 25 lakhs on day six, and Rs 22 lakhs on day seven. Despite the smaller weekday numbers, the film’s ability to cross Rs 4 crores worldwide is considered a decent achievement for a niche comedy-thriller with a limited marketing push.
A small-town detective’s big screen appeal
The story follows Ujjwalan, a quirky librarian and part-time village detective in the sleepy town of Plachikavu, where even the police rely on him to solve small local mysteries — from missing goats to misplaced jewelry. Dhyan Sreenivasan’s portrayal mixes comic charm with an underdog’s earnestness, making him an audience favorite. The film’s shift into darker territory — as Ujjwalan confronts a serial killer terrorizing the village — adds a layer of tension that has intrigued viewers and kept them returning to theatres.
Looking Ahead
With no official verdict declared yet, ‘Detective Ujjwalan’ will need to hold steady in its second weekend to secure a clear ‘hit’ tag. If positive word of mouth continues, this sleeper hit could extend its run, but with several competitions ahead, it will be hard for the film to hold well in theatres.
