Dakini Movie Review Highlights: The first half, much like the title suggests, is a comedy from the word go
A film from the producers of Maheshinte Prathikaram and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum directed and written by State award winning director Rahul Riji Nair, automatically ups the ante of expectation. But Dakini is nothing like Rahul Riji Nair has attempted in the past. His debut 'Ottamuri velicham' handled a rather serious and hard-hitting theme. However, Dakini, much like the title suggests, is a comedy from the word go. With an unusual and however lovely cast, Dakini is as it's tagline, old, wicked and adorable. The film also has Rahul Raj on the music and Gopi Sundar for the background music which only complements the theme. Dakini is a gangster movie meets family movie. An interesting mix for a comedy keeping with Malayali sensibilities.
This is a western retro classical meets Malayali sensibilities film. Dakini is about a group of four golden ager women, named Dakini by Luttappi, their helper-cum-aide. Everything about fun loving , independent senior citizen women is colourful and vibrant. They are even inquisitive enough to know to venture out into smartphones and WhatsApp.
The story takes a turn as Kuttan Pillai, another golden-ager, comes back to reclaim his long lost love for Mollikutty, now a mechanic and somewhat a tomboy who has no time for romance. Just as they rekindle their relationship and plan to get married Kuttan Pillai is in trouble with an underworld don Mayan over a hawala transaction. Mayan a self-styled assassin boss is from a family of underworld executioners and spells danger. Everybody is rightfully in fear of Mayan and by the interval Mayan means business and there's a abduction.
Who will step in to save the day? Will it be the golden agers, Dakini, or someone else?
