The notice to stop the screenings of the movie has been sent to director Amal Neerad, producer Nazriya Nazeem and scriptwriters Suhas and Sharaf. The petition says that many members of Pappali family are in respectable and honorable positions in the society, and many are well known personalities across the state whose reputation is being stained in the society through the family's depiction in 'Varathan'. The petition also argues that one of the scriptwriters of the movie is well aware of Pappali family's stature in society and yet has tarnished the family name purposefully in the movie.

There has been no response from the makers of the movie regarding the legal notice. The movie is a stylish narrative of a couple's resistance against society's unwanted intrusion into their privacy. Fahadh Faasil and Aishwarya Lekshmi play the lead characters in the movie
