Birju Maharaj, the legendary Kathak dancer passed away at the age of 83 and as per the reports he was under dialysis treatment following a kidney ailment. The Padma Vibhushan awardee would have been 84 the next month and his sudden demise has left everyone grieving. Several ardent admirers of the Kathak exponent, including celebrities from Mollywood, have taken to their respective social media handles to pay tribute to one of India’s best known artistes.

The young talented musician Stephen Devassy took to his official Instagram handle and posted a picture of the legend Birju Maharaj.

Sharing the picture Stephen Devassy penned a note that read, “Sad to hear the death of the Legend Padvibhushan Briju Maharaj Saab. A great inspiration of Dance. One of iconic figures in Indian Art. Got an opportunity to perform with him for Lakshmi Narayana global Music festival with @drlsubramaniam and with some great Artists.”
The renowned playback singer Hariharan penned a heartfelt note in tribute to Birju Maharaj that read, “It's been a year since you left us, but it only feels like a few days. Although my grief has subsided a little, I still feel raw. I don't have the words to express how much I miss you, guruji. I hope you're doing well and smiling down on all of us.” Hariharan ended the note with a loving heart emoji.

Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, the renowned actress-classical dancer, also took to her Instagram handle and penned a note that read, “End of an era...cannot imagine the Kathak world, the art world without ...shraddhanjali.” Lakshmi Gopalaswamy posted a series of pictures of Birju Maharaj’s performance that were taken a few years ago in Trivandrum.
Divya Unni, the popular Malayalam film actress cum classical dancer, shared an Instagram story with a note that read, “Pranams to the Legend. In our hearts forever. PT Birju Maharaj.”
