‘Big B’ to ‘Devadoothan’: Flop movies that became cult classics

Starting from Hollywood to Mollywood, there have been several films that we consider as classics today, that didn't work out well at the box office or even with the audience during the time of their release. Such films earn a cult following among the audience who even scratch their heads wondering how they flopped at the box office. Here let's take a look at some of the Malayalam movies that actually flopped at the box office, but later earned a cult following among movie buffs.

‘Devadoothan’

Mohanlal starrer ‘Devadoothan’ is still considered one of the most haunting films in the Malayalam film industry and the reason why the movie flopped at the box office is still unknown. Call it the shift in audience tastes, ‘Devadoothan’ will still be a success at the box office if it had a re-release at the theatres.

‘Big B’

According to the sources, Mammootty’s ‘Big B’ turned out to be a flop at the box office as it had to compete with Mohanlal’s massive entertainer film ‘Chotta Mumbai’. Although ‘Big B’ was not received well among Malayali audiences during its release in the year 2007, it gained massive cult status when it hit the mini screens, and to date ‘Big B’ is one of the best stylish action entertainers in Mollywood.

‘Kaalapani’

Priyadarshan’s film ‘Kaalapani’, even though is considered a classic and has bagged the state and national film awards, the movie didn't work well at the box office. ‘Kaalapani’, along with Priyadarshan’s terrific direction, offered one of the magnificent performances of the ace actor Mohanlal.

‘Winter’

Most of us may not even have heard of such a movie called ‘Winter’ and the movie didn't have a long run at the theatres. ‘Winter’ presented a different kind of horror that was alien to the audiences at that time. Years passed, and this Jayaram starrer horror movie slowly gained many positive reviews from the audiences who even called the film ‘the best horror movie in Mollywood’.
