The recently released family entertainer 'Ashakal Aayiram' is now preparing for its digital release after completing its theatrical run. The film marks the return of the popular real-life father-son duo, Jayaram and Kalidas Jayaram, in lead roles.
Directed by G. Prajith, the movie received decent responses from family audiences during its theatrical release and also did a good box office performance.
Now, the film is gearing up to reach a wider audience through its OTT release and reports from Filmibeat says that the digital streaming rights of 'Ashakal Aayiram' have been acquired by ZEE5 and the deal was reportedly finalised for a decent price after the film’s theatrical run.
Reports from the same portal also says that the film is expected to begin streaming on the platform in the coming days. However, the exact premiere date has not yet been officially confirmed by the makers or the streaming service.
Reports also suggest that the film may release in multiple languages, including the original Malayalam version along with Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. An official announcement about the OTT premiere is expected soon.
Story of a father and son
'Ashakal Aayiram' revolves around the complex relationship between a father and his son and the story follows Hariharan, played by Jayaram who is a medical representative who constantly struggles to make ends meet. He is deeply concerned about the future of his son Ajeesh, played by Kalidas Jayaram.
Ajeesh, however, has very different ambitions and the young man is a social media influencer who dreams of becoming an actor. His career choice disappoints his father, who worries about the lack of financial stability.
The father-son duo’s life takes an unexpected turn when a film crew arrives in their neighbourhood. The team is shooting a Malayalam film featuring a major superstar. The plot then gets more serious and it mixed both humor narrative along with serious sentimental elements.
Critical response to the film
The film received mixed responses from critics upon its release. Our exclusive ETimes review noted, “The film openly talks about nepotism and the “godfather culture” in the film industry. This becomes ironic because the actors are a real-life father and son. However, this self-awareness works against the film as Kalidas Jayaram’s (Ajeesh Hariharan) performance feels weak. Rather than questioning the “nepo-kid” label, his acting sometimes reinforces it."
Our review further says,"The female lead, played by Asha Sharath, is perhaps the film’s weakest link in terms of writing. Portraying a frail, submissive housewife who exists solely to cater to the men in her life, her character lacks depth and agency. Her constant optimism despite severe financial hardship feels more annoying than moving. A late attempt to give her a strong dialogue does not help. Overall, the character feels disconnected from the reality of the modern woman.”Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
