Streetlight revolves around the life of a middle-class girl called Hima, who is abused by her father; later, she ends up as a prostitute. The story traces her struggles to free herself from her bonds. The film will also throw light on the sufferings of AIDS victims, says Sankar.
Interestingly, Aparna shot for a few scenes on the streets, dressed up as a prostitute. One of the associate directors and I walked down the streets in Trivandrum, dressed up in a red sari, the look complete with red lipstick, jasmine flowers et al. To our surprise, a few people approached me, taking me for a prostitute! Later, when they found out that it was a film shoot, they were embarrassed. That was fun to watch, says Aparna.
Sankar tells us that the men later approached him and requested him to delete the scenes where they were caught on camera.
Five stages of Himas life have been chronicled in the movie. Irshad, Praveen Prem and Krishna form the rest of the cast.
The film is based on Sankars novel, Oru Pennum Parayathathu. The story is not my imagination. I have seen these incidents in our society, says the director.
