'Already been a fan, excited,' Shaun Romy speaks about Mohanlal's 'Drishyam 3' alongside 'Karakkam' release - Exclusive
The Malayalam film industry is currently celebrating the success of 'Drishyam 3', with audiences, critics and celebrities sharing their reactions to the latest chapter in the blockbuster franchise. Among those expressing excitement is actress Shaun Romy, who will soon be seen in the upcoming musical horror comedy 'Karakkam'.
Speaking exclusively to ETimes about the presence of both films in theatres, Shaun said she sees it as a win-win situation for moviegoers.
While 'Drishyam 3' offers an intense thriller experience, 'Karakkam' aims to deliver comedy, music, and supernatural entertainment.
The actress also opened up about her admiration for Mohanlal, her memories from 'Lucifer', and what audiences can expect from 'Karakkam' when it arrives in cinemas on May 28.
Talking about the buzz generated by the movie, she told us, "Everyone is talking about it so I’m getting fomo." The actress also revealed that she has been a long-time admirer of the franchise and is looking forward to watching the latest installment.
Shaun said, " I’m super excited to see the 3rd part as I have already been a fan of the previous two films."
Shaun believes the release of 'Drishyam 3' has created a festive atmosphere among Malayalam cinema audiences. According to her, movie lovers now have an opportunity to enjoy two completely different cinematic experiences during the holiday season.
She said, "I am super excited for the audience because it means they can definitely watch 'Drishyam 3', as everyone will be going to see it, and then they can also enjoy something more light-hearted and fun. These are two completely different kinds of movies. I think the weekend plans are sorted for everyone. I hope people love it. I can't wait to see the response. I'm happy that our film is releasing at the same time because people can watch both. It's two different flavours at once, and everyone is in for a sweet time this Bakrid."
Shaun also spoke warmly about Mohanlal, with whom she previously shared screen space in 'Lucifer' and also with his son Pranav Mohanlal in 'Hridayam'.
The actress recalled the positive atmosphere he created on set and described him as someone whose presence naturally inspires others.
Speaking about the superstar, she said, "He was quite funny on the sets of Lucifer and is such a positive and charming person. I want to wish him a very happy birthday. He’s one of my favourite actors ever. Just watching him act and seeing how present he is in every moment is truly special."
The actor's portrayal of Georgekutty has once again become a major talking point among fans and critics alike.
The actress plays a character named Rani Mariya and explained that the story revolves around a group of ghosts who unexpectedly return to the world of the living.
Describing the plot, she said, "It’s a comedy, a light-hearted film with proper ghost vibes. My character’s name is Rani Mariya, and we are all ghosts. I don’t want to explain exactly why we are there, but basically, we just want to go back, and suddenly, we are summoned into the real world. Even we are scared. Then we get stuck with these two characters, played by Sreenath Bhasi and Pravin, and we are literally forcing them to take us back. The story explores how we came back to life and what our backstory is. These two characters take us back to where we came from, and the whole journey unfolds from there. It’s a funny, light-hearted comedy."
She also expressed her enthusiasm for the film's musical aspects and retro-inspired style.
Reacting to the film being promoted as Malayalam cinema's first musical horror comedy, Shaun said, "I loved learning the dance sequences. It has a strong 80s vibe, very much from the Michael Jackson era. The costumes, the choreography, and everything associated with the dancing were exciting. Music is a major part of the film. Even on set, we used to play music all the time while the cameras were rolling."
Directed by Nipin Narayanan, 'Karakkam' features a cast that includes Sreenath Bhasi, Femina George, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Sidharth Bharathan, Bijukuttan, Manikandan R. Achari and Midhutty. Music for the film has been composed by Sam C. S..
According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 11.05 crore net in India on Day 2 after earning Rs 15.85 crore on opening day. The second-day figure represented a 30.3 percent decline.
The film was screened across 4,886 shows on Day 2 compared to 5,506 shows on Day 1. Overall occupancy dropped from 51.3 percent to 44.5 percent.
Despite the decline, Drishyam 3 has accumulated Rs 26.90 crore in India net collections and Rs 31.18 crore in India gross collections within two days.
The overseas market remains a major strength. The film reportedly earned Rs 20 crore overseas on Day 2, taking its overseas total to Rs 45 crore.
As a result, the worldwide gross collection has reached an impressive Rs 76.18 crore.
Kerala continues to lead the film's performance. The Malayalam version alone contributed Rs 9.85 crore net on Day 2 and recorded a strong overall occupancy of 61 percent, with night shows touching 68.33 percent occupancy.
Meanwhile, 'Drishyam 3' features Mohanlal, Meena, Esther Anil, Ansiba Hassan, Siddique and others in pivotal roles.
