What Is Alappuzha Gymkhana About?

The film follows the journey of five friends from Alappuzha who have just completed their 12th-grade exams. Unfortunately, only Shanavas manages to pass, while the others fail and struggle to secure college admissions. Jojo, one of the friends, discovers that they can gain entry through the sports quota and proposes they try boxing. This leads them to the Alappuzha Gymkhana boxing school, where they come under the guidance of coach Salim. However, Shanavas soon drops out, and DJ switches to wrestling, leaving the remaining three friends to push forward. They later receive training from Antony Joshua, a strict and seasoned boxer preparing for an important tournament. Together, the group works tirelessly to compete at the district championship, hoping to qualify for the state-level competition.

Our review

Before watching the film, just take a look at our ETimes review. We gave the film a rating of 3.5 stars and our review reads, “Technically, the film is a treat. The audiography, raw, immersive, and at times overwhelming, places us right in the middle of sweaty gyms and crowded streets. The stunt choreography is electric, making the boxing sequences feel visceral and alive. Songs are rooted, catchy, and carry a local flavour that adds charm without overpowering. The performances are uniformly stellar. Naslen brings a restless energy to Jojo, part clueless, part charming, all heart. Lukman as Antony Joshuva is a quiet storm, carrying his role with understated brilliance. Baby Jean’s David John is endearing, while Anagha Ravi's Natasha has quiet confidence and surprising grit.”
