Popular Malayalam-Tamil actor Shanker’s mother

passed away. She was 85. She was living in Edappally, Ernakulam.

took to his social media handle to share the unfortunate news. “My mother Sulochana Panicker (85) has passed away,” he penned. Sulochana Panicker is survived by her children, Shanker, Krishnakumar and Indira.

Shanker who began his career in cinema in the late 1970s shot to fame with the Tamil movie 'Oru Thalai Ragam', which also marks his debut as a lead actor. His role of Raja in the campus romantic film impressed cinephiles, and Shanker even went on to be referred to as 'Oru Thalai Ragam Shankar'. After his successful stint in Kollywood, he appeared in 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal', in which Mohanlal made his debut playing the villain. The 1980 Malayalam film was a great opening for both Mohanlal and Shanker, and there has been no looking back for the duo ever since then. Shanker went on to work with some of the popular names in Malayalam cinema including PG Viswambharan, Hariharan, Bharathan, Jijo Punnoose, Fazil, KS Sethumadhavan, Priyadarshan, Joshiy, and Sibi Malayil, among others. He also worked in Tamil movies and gave a handful of memorable characters. Shanker also went on to direct a few films including 'Keralotsavam 2009'.

On the work front, Shanker was last seen in ‘Bhramam’ directed by Ravi K Chandran.
