Actor Sarath Appani to play the lead in a Tamil political thriller

Actor Sarath Appani, whose last outing was Joshiy’s Joju George-starrer Anthony, is all set for his first lead role in Tamil. Directed by debutant Ponthamizhan, the film will see Sarath in various looks.
Sarath says, “The project with Ponthamizhan is untitled for now, and is a political thriller.” He says that he was offered several roles similar to the one he did in his Tamil series, Auto Shankar, but he chose Alangu, directed by SP Shaktivel, which in his words, “tells the story of people, caste, land.”
“I got several calls, but all the roles offered were negative and dark. Even if it’s a villain role, there should be distinctive characteristics to it. Simply playing a villain is pointless, I feel. Villains also have stories to say. After I started doing lead roles, people told me to stop doing villain roles, but I have told them it’s my decision. I look at acting as a profession and do roles without wondering if a certain role will affect my future roles or how people will perceive me. As long as my character registers with the audience, I’m open to accepting any role,” he says.
Speaking about working in Anthony, he says, “The role in Anthony is a memorable one for me as it is Joshiy sir’s film. Keecheri Simon was received well, and I have received great feedback for it. Being in that location itself was a learning experience. I consider it a second phase in my career.”
In Malayalam, he has two upcoming projects, Point Range and Jangaar, both of which will see him in a lead role .
