Johnpaul’s directorial ‘Aashan’ starring Indrans in the lead role has hit the theatres today, February 5. With superstar Mammootty’s green light ahead of the release, ‘Aashan’ opened to packed theatres on Thursday. The film, which also features Joemon Jyothir, Shobi Thilakan, Bibin Perumpally, Abin Bino, Kudassanad Kanakam, and Madan Gowri in key roles, seems to have impressed the majority of the audience. The comedy drama revolves around a film-within-a-film concept. Indrans plays the titular character, and moviegoers are going gaga over his performance. The senior actor who started his career doing supporting humorous roles, has been leaping ahead with lead roles lately, and this new release has come out with flying colours. Social media platforms, including X, are filled with audience response. Let’s take a look at what netizens are talking about, ‘Aashan’.
A movie buff called Indrans the ‘standout performer’ in the film, and expressed that the film is a good watch. “Aashaan good one. Nicely done by John Paul. Indrans the standout performer and the soul of the movie. Jothir is very good too. Not an entertainer or feel-good movie. Somewhere in between those.
Could have trimmed some portions towards the climax. Overall, a good attempt. Rating ⅗,” the X (formerly Twitter) post reads.
Another agreed that the filmmaker has managed to deliver a ‘feel-good’ entertainer. “Feel-good cinema done right. Plenty of fun moments set against a cinema backdrop, packed with neat emotions. Superb performances from all, especially Indrans & Joemon Jyothir. Johnpaul is back. Overall, a good watch,” the tweet reads.
A third was in awe of Indrans performance, and wrote, “I don’t think anyone thought that there was such a talented actor hiding within Indrans. While he, through his comedy, could make us roar with laughter, his serious roles astonished us.”
One X (previously Twitter) user found the second half of ‘Aashan’ was melodramatic, which affected the movie’s overall experience. “#Aashaan starts off on a promising note with a well-handled first half that balances fun and emotional moments effectively. Indrans delivers a strong performance, while Jyomon supports well in a refreshingly different role. However, the film loses its grip in the second half, shifting heavily into melodrama that feels overdone,” the X post reads.
The netizen further adds, “The narrative begins to wander, and the director seems unsure of how to take the story forward. What follows feels more like a cinema school exercise than an engaging film, with the decision to show an entire movie within the movie making the experience tiresome. Musically, apart from #KunjikavilMeghame, the rest of the songs are average, and even that track is barely used, lasting less than a minute on screen. A weak and poorly executed second half ultimately drags the film down, resulting in an underwhelming and disappointing theatrical experience.”
A movie forum on X (Twitter) opined that the film didn’t work as a whole, but is definitely a decent ‘average watch’. “There are fun moments here and there, but something just doesn’t fully work. Indrans did a hell of a job, well supported by Jyomon in a cliche breaking role for him. The music was really good, but I must say the feel we got from listening to Kunjikavil Meghame was somehow missing in the film, don’t know why. Apart from the performances, something was holding it back. The first half was fine, with some genuinely fun moments, whereas the second half felt a bit laggy once the melodrama kicked in. Considering the director’s previous works like Guppy and Ambili, which had a stronger emotional grip and better narrative balance, this feels like a slight step down. An average watch overall. Nothing more,” the post read.
Another urged that one must watch ‘Aashan’ in the theatres. “#Aashan very good and promising first half. Indrans & Jomon superb peformance Technical aspects are perfect. Songs and BGM are one of the major positives of the film. Don't miss it in the theater.”
