Jallikattu’, directed by
Lijo Jose Pellissery has been selected as India's official entry to the Oscars 2021. This piece of news is exciting at various levels as ‘Jallikattu’ also becomes the third Malayalam film to have been selected as India’s official entry to the 93rd Academy Awards. Mohanlal starrer ‘Guru’ and Salim Kumar starrer ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’ is the other Malayalam films, which earlier received a chance.
‘Jallikattu’ is selected under the category ‘Best International Feature film’.
A 14-member committee of the Film Federation of India picks the Indian nominee every year and this year 'Jallikattu' was selected as the official entry from 27 other films, which includes Amitabh Bachchan’s 'Gulabo Sitabo'.
Released on October 4, 2019, ‘Jallikattu’ has also earned the director Lijo Jose Pellissery the Kerala State Award for best direction. Featuring
Antony Varghese Pepe, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad, and
Santhy Balachandran in pivotal roles, ‘Jallikattu’ is a man vs beast thriller. The movie narrates the story of a buffalo that runs amok after escaping from the butcher shop to save its life. The movie draws light into the savagery of men and how the ‘human’ transforms into a beast in no time. The movie offered an edge of their seat experience to the audience and it also won several international acclaims. ‘Jallikattu’ was premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and also at the 24th Busan International Film Festival.
‘Jallikattu’ is based on a story by S Hareesh, while S Hareesh and R Jayakumar have crafted the screenplay. O Thomas Panicker is the producer of the movie. Girish Gangadharan's magnificent frames captured the whole disorientation happening around, making it a compelling watch. Deepu Joseph has edited the film, while Renganaath Ravee has managed the sound design.
