Celebs Vijayaraghavan and Mukesh knew actress Kalpana since their childhood. The two recount the memories about the actress, who passed away on Monday:
She was the same in real as you see in reel: Rimi Tomy
Even before I started my singing career, I knew Kalpana chechi. Our friendship goes back a good 16 years. You would never see her without a smile on her face.
1x1 polls
There are a lot of people who are different from the reel selves in real, but Kalpana chechi was the same jovial self in real too, talking to everyone from the top most in the crew to lightboys. She would always tell me that I reminded her of her younger self. She always considered me family, and it was a mutual feeling.
Dulquer’s character in Charlie meets many kinds of people but it’s Kalpana chechi’s character which stays in our minds. I will always regret not calling her after watching it. The last scene in the film is actually eerily true. She lived for cinema, and died for it.
Kalpana still had a lot of great performances left in her: Mukesh
Our families shared a close relationship, as her parents were part of my father’s drama troupe. My father had rented a house near our home for them in Kollam. I first met Urvashi and through her, got to know Kalpana. After watching her Tamil film with Bhagyaraj, I was astonished just like every other viewer. Only Kalpana could have done that role. She owned every role she did. I have acted in several movies including Poochakkoru Mookkuthi and Innathe Program that had us competing during the comedy scenes.

The last time we met, she told me that she wanted to see my play Naga. But when I called her a day before our performance in Kochi, her phone was switched off. I remember telling my wife that she is a busy person shuttling between industries.
In one way they say the greatest blessing for an artiste is to die while performing. But I believe Kalpana still had a lot of great performances left in her. They will remain unscripted because there are none matching her calibre to take them up.
Acting came easy to her, whichever the role: Vijayaraghavan
As an actress, I consider her to be among the top 10. Acting came easy to her, whichever the role. That’s the greatest talent any artiste should possess. Our families shared a good relationship even before both of us entered films. Her father Chavara VP Nair was part of our drama troupe and my first role in theatre, when I was barely six years old, was as his son. Kalpana and I have acted in several films including Bangalore Days. She’s someone who doesn’t let her problems affect others and would rather be positive about everything.
Wherever she went, she spread happiness: Anoop Menon
I am too shocked to react, on hearing the news. Her demise is a personal loss for my wife and me as she was one of the first people to call me after I announced my engagement. She has always told me that her role in The Dolphins was one of her best. But more than being a co-star, she was really close to me as a person. I have never ever seen her talking ill about anyone. Even though she had health issues, she never went into a cocoon. Wherever she went, she spread so much happiness – with just her simple smile and kind words.
