Mohanlal's directorial debut, 'Barroz', was released on December 25, 2024, and has received mixed reviews since hitting theatres. Despite the high expectations around the film and its impressive visual effects and ambitious production design, it falls short in storytelling and execution. On the third day marking its first Friday, the film made over Rs 1.25 crore as per early estimates.

As per trade analyst Sacnilk, On its opening day, 'Barroz' earned approximately Rs 3.45 crore at the box office. The film's earnings saw a decline over the following days, with collections of Rs 1.6 crore on the second day and Rs 1.25 crore on the third day, bringing its total to around Rs 6.3 crore within three days. The film had an overall occupancy rate of 17.97% for Malayalam screenings with Morning Shows at 8.46%, Afternoon Shows at 18.44%, Evening Shows at 20.67% and Night Shows at 24.30%. And 19.78% for Telugu screenings on December 27, indicating a lukewarm response from audiences.

The film, based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel 'Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure', is a fantasy adventure aimed at children and features Mohanlal in the titular role.

'Barroz' is the story of a ghost who has guarded a hidden treasure for centuries, awaiting its rightful heir to be freed from his duties. The film also features Maya Rao West, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, and Cesar Lorente Raton.

Mohanlal's decision to make his directorial debut with a children's film was seen as a bold move, but many reviews suggest that he may have focused too heavily on 3D technology at the expense of character development and plot coherence.
