Pennu Case

Pennu Case opens with an interesting setup, with Men’s Army heading out together to crash a wedding. Suresh, played by Aju Varghese, is a man who finally gets married after years of waiting. What begins as a quirky premise soon falls apart in execution.


Directed by Febin Sidharth, the film is largely set inside a police station, with Hakkim Shah playing the officer in charge of the case. The writing, editing and direction are consistently weak. The narrative lacks coherence and rhythm, and scenes fail to build either humour or tension. The comedy, which the film heavily relies on, rarely works due to poor timing and ineffective editing.


Hakkim Shah, usually seen as a promising actor, delivers one of his weakest performances, largely due to a badly written role. Nikhila Vimal, despite being positioned at the centre of the narrative, offers nothing new. Her performance feels repetitive, with familiar expressions and no added depth.


A film does not become women-centric simply because a woman occupies the central role or gets more screen time. Pennu Case fails to meaningfully explore its female character or offer any strong commentary on relationships or deception.


Overall, Pennu Case is a missed opportunity. An interesting idea is let down by poor writing, weak performances and flawed technical execution. An underwhelming watch that struggles to rise above its shortcomings.
