Kumar Chowdhury’s second feature wins hearts in the festival circuit

Filmmaker Kumar Chowdhury is back with his highly anticipated second feature, Sob Khobori Bishesh Noy (This Is Not Breaking News), a quietly powerful exploration of memory, loss, and resilience that is already making waves on the international festival circuit.

The realistic social drama, produced by Prasun Mukherjee and starring Prasun Gain, Piyali Das, Deboprasad Halder, Ranojoy Bhattacharyya, Ranjini Chattopadhyay, Sipra Lahiri, and Kajal Shambhu, has been officially selected at prestigious global platforms, including the Kuala Lumpur International Film Academy Awards, New Jersey Indian and International Film Festival, A Royal Chance Film Festival, and the Jagran Film Festival.

Marking a significant stride in contemporary Bengali cinema, the film showcases Kumar Chowdhury’s signature storytelling style: subtle, introspective, and deeply human. Rather than relying on spectacle, Sob Khobori Bishesh Noy thrives on silence and unspoken emotions, tracing the emotional journeys of Amal, a man clinging to fading memories of his father, and Lopa, who distances herself from hers. Set in July 2020, the story follows Amal and Lopa as they travel from Kolkata to retrieve Amal’s mother from their ancestral home. A pause in Birpur – a town where Amal’s father passed away twenty years ago—sparks an emotional confrontation. Along the way, encounters with ordinary yet resilient individuals reflect the couple’s own suppressed realities, creating moments of reflection on love, faith, endurance, and the coexistence of life under the shadow of loss.
