When Trojan women take the stage

The play will be staged at Ranga Shankara May 24 onwards

The Trojan Women

is a new adaptation of Greek playwright Euripides’ play by the same name, which is the third tragedy of a trilogy on the Trojan war. It was written during the Peloponnesian war around 415 BC, and is considered a commentary on the aftermath of the war and the pathos that it brings.

Euripides

won the second prize for this play at the festival of Dionysia.

The play narrates the lament of the women of Troy, who are the lone survivors of the war. They wait to be told their fates by a Greek messenger. The four Trojan women (Hecuba, Cassandra, Andromache, and Helen) lamenting in the play are the same as the women who appear in Homer’s Illiad crying over Hector’s dead body. The course of the play reveals what has been decided for each of them, and how they deal with it.

The play is directed by Meera Sitaraman, and it features actor V Balakrishnan, Aparna Kumar, Shakthi Ramani, Roshini Sridhar, Nivedita Venkatesh, Shivangi Singh, Karthik Gowrishankar, Adhwitha Arumugam,

Meera Sitaraman

and Vishwa Bharath. It will be staged at

Ranga Shankara

May 24 onwards.
