Founded by a group of theatre enthusiasts in 2011,

Vykhari Theatre

aims at promoting and improving Kannada theatre culture. The group has been working over the years to provide aspiring artistes with the much-deserved platform to showcase their craft and potential. It’s been trying to encourage and support young and energetic theatre enthusiasts, as the group is committed to give prominence to new scripts and concepts. The term ‘vaikhari’ is a Sanskrit word. It’s a form of speech which is uttered, expressed or otherwise manifested as a vehicle of thought.

Vykhari’s first production was a Kannada folk play, titled ‘Bettale Harake’. It was written by Dr Divaspathi Hegde and directed by

Mahesh Pallakki

. The storyline of the play was based on the cultural practices in Karnataka. ‘Mahakala’, the group’s second Kannada play was an adaptation of the script ‘Oorubhanga’, which as written by famed playwright

Bhasa

. This piece of theatrical was based on the story of

Mahabharata

, particularly focussing on the after-effects of the battle of Kurukshetra and the subsequent downfall of Duryodhana.
Apart from working on Kannada plays, the collective also conducts workshops for people from different groups, and also host a number of Kannada drama shows.
