The lockdown saw many acclaimed plays being made open to viewers, enabling the audiences to watch some of their favourite plays online. Students of Nilakanteshwara Natya Seva Sangha, popularly known as Ninasam, also released the recordings of some of well-received plays on YouTube.
Among those were ‘Mooka Nartaka’, a play by the students of Ninasam (2018-19 batch), and directed by Omkar KR; ‘Shahajahan’, directed by Manju Kodagu, is a creation by the students of (2019-20 batch); ‘Chakori Chitte’ is a children’s play done by the students of (2019-20 batch), under the guidance of Shaili Sathyu from Mumbai; ‘Vishvamitra Menake, Dance Madodu Enake?’ is a 2019 play, written by Jogi; and ‘Hrudayada Teerpu’, a play by based on the story by Banu Mushtaq and directed by Ganesh M, it’s created by the students of Ninasam from the 2019-20 batch.

Founded in 1949 by a few performing arts enthusiasts from and around Heggodu, Sagara Taluk, Ninasam is a multi-winged cultural institution that has gained immense recognition and appreciation from the national and international community of theatre over the past several decades.
It’s known for its unique experiment in reforming the association between the art and community by blending formal and informal modes of education. Through this, Ninasam aims to be the bridge between the microcosm of rural Karnataka and the macrocosm of the world. Among the many honours that it has received is the ‘Ramon Magsaysay Award for Creative Arts, Communication and Journalism’, which was conferred on its co-founder and guiding spirit, the late KV Subbanna in the year 1991.
