Well known for his musical prowess,
Karthik Hebbar
’s latest theatrical venture is unique in more ways than one. Titled
Patanga Prabhaava
, the play attempts to draw a similarity between people’s emotional journey with the theories of quantum physics. The narrative dwells on the themes of
gender identity
and quest for love, and how these in turn shape human personality and behaviour. Featuring famed artistes Dr Seetha Kote and Chandra Keerthi, the drama premieres today at
Prabhat KH Kala Soudha
. Presented by Dhee Mahi (Theater Wing), the play will be opened by transgender activist Akkai Padmashali.
“The narrative is built on a non-linear format that travels back and forth in time, following a conversation between Draupadi and Shikhandi from the
Mahabharata and that between Krishna and Mo, who belong in the contemporary world. Although, the focus remains on the different struggles of sexual minorities in our society, the play also underlines the problems faced by women. Overpowered by a patriarchal mindset, we have not been able to reach a common ground when it comes to accepting people from the third gender, even after the Apex Court has given a nod to it,” says Karthik, who has written, directed and composed music for Patanga Prabhaava.
The play features music from Sanskrit theatre, alongside elements of
Koodiyattam
, classical music and Jazz. “The music, however, remains fluid overall,” Karthik adds.
The director urges the audience to come with an open mind, as he attempts to tell a story of gender, love and spirituality — all of which are “discussed with passion and heart by four characters who travel between time, in search of understanding and meaning”. According to him, particle and quantum physics have opened new doors for understanding the mechanics of creation.
More about the play… Conversations unfold on one night in a dimension where the concept of time is a myth. Two particles floating in space discuss the limitedness that obstructs scientific perception of basic human existential questions. This dialogue unfolds how binary thought processes make it nearly impossible to accept and embrace any concept that cannot be bound by binary walls.
