Migration in contemporary India

The play

Basava Express

is an attempt to study the subject of migration to cities in contemporary India. This is the story of Shantu from Shaktinagar and Basavanappa from Anegundi who flee their flood-affected villages only to get trapped in the dream of the metropolis called Bangalore. While Shantu wants to be an artist, Basavanappa is saving money to be able to repay his debt in the village. The play explores relationships between father and son and the relationship of migrants with the city they inhabit. This play is set in the aftermath of the 2009 floods in North Karnataka.
This play was first written as part of a writing workshop organized by Indian Ensemble in 2012. A rehearsed reading of this play was organized by TFA (Toto Funds the Arts) as part of the Jagriti New Writing Festival (NWF) on March 1, 2014.
