Akku is an adaptation from three short stories, namely Ammachiya Nenapugalu, Akku and Puttammatte Mommagalu, by noted Kannada litterateur Vaidehi. The play is plotted in a seemingly different narrative of very intrinsic sensibilities. It primarily intends to capture and subtly express the continuous struggle of a woman in my society, for her existence in different levels.
The play explores beyond the perception of Akku’s character as a mentally-challenged woman, in her struggle for existence. The whimsical male characters portrayed in the play, control and play around the female characters through both the psychological and physical violence, thus limiting her role to physical means to quench their sexual desires. It haunts us as the different faces of the male are exposed in a male-dominant system. On the contrary, women appear like to exist and imprisoned in a claustrophobic space directly or indirectly controlled by invisible threads, in these contexts Akku seems to be a bird in free flight.
The artistes of the play include Geetha Surathkal, Yashaswini, Divya Karanth, Divya Karanth, Usha S, Varna, Hitha, Avani Shetty, Adithi Ural, BG Ramakrishna, Rajkumar, Radhakrishna Urala, Vishwanath Urala, Rajesh Kashyap, Muralidhar Navda, Dilip, Tejaswi Marakini, Siddaramappa and Anjan Bharadwaj.
The play is scheduled to take place on June 25 (7.30 pm) at Ranga Shankara, JP Nagar.
