Court clears deck for Chama Chaluve
Two years after allegations that it was plagiarised, the popular play Chama Chaluve will be staged in Mysore on Sunday.A local court in Mysore had stayed the staging of the play after folklore expert Dr PK Rajashekar alleged that the play, written by Dr Sujata Akki and directed for stage by Mandya Ramesh, was plagiarised from his 1992 book Chamundi Siri Chamundi.

After a successful run of over 40 shows, ChamaChaluve was pulled in November 2012. The case has continued for the last two years but now finally the verdict has gone in favour of the play as the original story is folklore.
The folk story talks about the love between Goddess Chamundeshwari of Mysore and Lord Nanjundeshwara of Nanjangud. Rajashekar had collected folk stories and songs and published a book based on it later. He claimed that in his book he created new characters and dialogues that were not in the folk version. The court however held that ChamaChaluve was not based on ChamundiSiriChamundi.
S p e a k i n g t o M i r r o r, Ramesh said, “Folk stories belong to the people. In fact, I was fascinated with this story from my childhood. I would very often hear the folk song, HaavadruKachchabarda, sung by folk artists and students. When I read the play, I got an idea and began my own research into the folk stories around it.“
The 130-minute play will be staged on Sunday at the Rangayana, and from November 18 onwards at the open stage in Vanaranga.
