Abhishek Majumdar, Bengaluru-based writer, director and actor, has won the first Shankar Nag Theatre award instituted by Ranga Shankara to commemorate his 60th birth anniversary .
“Shankar Nag was an example of an ideal “rangakarmi“. He had the capacity to direct, act, write and, most of all, garner people around him to dream with him. We want to give an award in his name to a theatre all-rounder who embodies service to theatre,“ said Arundhati Nag.

Majumdar is also a creative director of Indian Ensemble.His plays include Harlesden High Street, An Arrangement of Shoes, A Small Small World, The Djinns Of Eidgah, Afterlife of Birds and Gasha. He has received various scholarships and grants, including the Charles Wallace Scholarship and has been awarded the Inlaks Scholarship in Theatre for 2008-2009.
Girish Karnad and Naseeruddin Shah will present the award (a citation and Rs 1 lakh) at RangaShankara on Sunday .
A PROUD MOMENT
"I am really happy to have been selected for the Shankar Nag award. It's named after a doyen of Kannadatheatre, and is a great honour for all youngsters in this field. I hope we can live up to the faith that RangaShankara has reposed in us," said Abhishek Majumdar.
