Christopher Burchell

, the National Award-winning sound artiste from Bengaluru, who has also composed the background score for Karma Takapa’s film,

Ralang Road

that is representing India at the 52nd

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

in Czech Republic. The movie marks an Indian entry in the prestigious festival after a gap of 13 years. A painter by training, Christopher practices the art of sound and music by passion. Having worked on location audio recording and sound post production for a slew of creative projects — chiefly short films, documentaries and television series — over the past 17 years, Christopher, sort of, masters the art of blending in his fine art traits while crafting music for cinematic ventures.

Centered on a cold hill town in Sikkim, Ralang Road doesn’t harp on the picturesque vistas of the region. Instead, this mystery-drama follows the lives of four individuals who get entwined in a mesh of coincidences on a seemingly mundane day. So, how did this film happen to you? “This is the first feature-length film that I have composed music for. I had previously worked with the director on an FTII project. He roped me in when he started working on this film,” says Christopher. He adds, “We didn’t follow a rulebook, as such, while working on the project. More than focusing on a situation, our attempt was to sustain an emotion — something that contradicts the darkness. The aim was to react to things from the audiences’ point of view.”

Not many know that Christopher, who studied at the city’s Ken School of Art, is also the country’s first National Award recipient in the Best On-Location Sound Recording category (special mention) for his work in a documentary, titled Remembering Kurdi, by Saumyananda Sahi. Christopher is currently working on illustrations for a graphic novel.
