Filmmaker Gururaj Kulkarni’s debut directorial Amruth Apartments is about the journey of a young couple who are contemplating divorce, but then get pulled into an investigation of a certain incident as witnesses. Gururaj, whose entry into Sandalwood was as producer of SD Arvinda’s Last Bus, says that he wrote the from the perspective of today’s generation.
“The lead couple play a Kannadiga and Bengali respectively, who fall in love, get married; only to then realise that each of them has quirks that the other person cannot digest. Like, for instance, he does not like the smell of non-vegetarian food being fried in their kitchen. In a way, this couple is a look at others like them, who commit to a relationship, and, as an offshoot, invest in an apartment, car and other luxuries of life. But then, when hardship hits, does love conquer all, or do they go their separate ways? We have also explored the apartment culture, wherein you have people from different regions in one society, who may or may not know each other,” he explains.
And now, given the cultural backgrounds of the lead couple, played by
Tarak Ponnappa and Urvashi Govardhan, the team has incorporated a special song with Kannada and Bengali lyrics. “The song has been composed and sung by SD Arvinda. We have used Rabindranath Tagore’s poem Ekla Chalo and added Kannada lyrics as well. The song plays in the background at a time when the couple need to face a stressful situation and win it,” adds Gururaj
