Maadeva singer Hanumankind’s new single aims to give voice to the voiceless

As an independent rapper,

Hanumankind

was still the new kid on the block in Bengaluru’s music scene, rapping “here and there”. He had been involved with music for a while, but seriously started pursuing it only last year, releasing a single called Southside. Then, the seemingly unthinkable happened —– he was asked to rap in English for a Kannada movie and the song,

, which he sang with Sanjith Hegde, became one of the biggest hits in recent times. Such has been the adulation for the song, that Hanumankind is now referred to as the Maadeva singer.
Since then, the young rapper has been busy with his own creations and is now all set to release his second single tomorrow. In fact, in June, he had posted a portion of the song, called Options, on his Instagram page, which was lapped up by his fans. “Initially, when I wrote the song, I was just trying to show that I have

options

— to get up in the morning and do what I want to, or have a family that I can reach out to and live in an environment that allows me to think outside of the realm that the system has set. I wanted to write from the perspective of an outsider who does not have those options. I am privileged that I can take these thoughts and break out of the confines that is typically considered structure that society enforces on us. Options is just me trying to show that a lot of people don’t have that. And you can see that if you go outside on any street in India. I came about with the idea after seeing people doing things that are just stuck in the system. They know no other way. Being the voice of the voiceless was the idea I went with,” he says.
The emotion in the song, he adds, is a mix of anger, angst and pain. “If you were trapped in a corner and were consistently going through a rough patch, because that’s what you were accustomed to, you would be angry, frustrated, sad and hopeless. The track comes across as a little aggressive and in your face, but at this point, that’s the best way to come at it,” Hanumankind says
