Title disputes, it would seem, have become a regular fixture in
Sandalwood. Take, for instance, Varada and Varadanayaka and Adda and Prem Adda, among others. The latest to have run into trouble is Sharan’s upcoming film Adyaksha, which is slated for an Independence Day release.
A city court has stayed the film’s release in a complaint against the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, for granting the team the title, when the complainant (producer
Mukthar) holds the rights to a very similar title, Adyaksharu.
When BT spoke to the team of Adyaksha, they ruled out postponing the release, contending that the KFCC is the sole body that can rule in favour of or against a film’s title. “We have the rights to our film’s title, Sharan Adyaksha, in writing from the chamber. Our title card clearly mentions this, but since our hero is Sharan, people assumed that it stood for Sharan in Adyaksha. The case, meanwhile, is against the chamber, questioning its power to grant film titles. Discussions have been on with the parties concerned and an amicable solution has apparently been arrived at. The case will be withdrawn on Monday,” says a source from the team of the film.
