Kannada star Sudeep’s film Maanikya is all set to hit screens later this week. But before the release gathered momentum, three of his protégés — his nephew Sanchit S, Rahul and Gagan — got together to film a two-minute promotional video, in which they quiz Bangaloreans about what the word ‘Maanikya’ means. “We asked a cross section of people what Maanikya means and the responses we got were interesting enough to create a short video,” says Sanchith, who also makes his debut as assistant director with this film.
“We shot footage for two days and then edited it over one night before it was ready to be screened online. While most of the people who we spoke with were flummoxed with what the word might mean, quite a few defined it simply as ‘Sudeep’s next film’,” he tells us.
And for the uninitiated, Maanikya translates to ‘precious jewel’. The only person who got it, well almost, was a jeweller whose answer was — “We don’t have that at our store.” Well, at least get him to the screening somebody!
