We still lack strong roles written for women: Medini

Medini Kelamane, an alumnus of NSD (National School of Drama), is making headway in Sandalwood with a pivotal role in Ekka. The acting bug caught her early as the actor’s father K G Krishnamurthy was into theatre. “When I was born our theatre company came into existence, so the passion for the art came to me naturally. Now that I am into films, I put a lot of thought into my projects,” says Medini.
'ACTORS GAIN RECOGNITION BY TAKING ON ROLES IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES' Very early in her career, Medini worked in Hindi films like Dobaaraa, “There is thorough professionalism and very little hierarchy in Bollywood. The focus is always to get the best performances out of the actors. Crossing language barriers helps in getting recognition which the artist needs and of course, it would enrich financially as well,” she states.
'WOMEN DESERVE BETTER ROLES IN MOVIES' Medini feels there is still a long way to go as far as character sketching for female artists is concerned in Sandalwood. “Earlier in Kannada films, the character arc for actresses had an impact on the story which resonated well with the audiences, but these days the roles are decorative. Malayalam and Tamil are doing great in that category and we need to adopt that here,” she adds. Medini thinks that OTT has helped break the conventional pattern of cinema. “OTT has helped to touch upon sensitive subjects. This leads to chatter around it, which is good,” she tells us.
