Actress Bhoomi Shetty remembers how she was once reprimanded by a pourakarmika for mixing wet and dry waste. “She explained how tough it was for them to segregate it and how every household contributes to their woes when they don’t follow rules. I then realised the magnitude of the problem.”
The actor is now passionately involved in anchoring waste management sessions to educate people.

Bhoomi’s go-green tips
  • When you order in food, wash the container and dispose it. The people who clean it at the units are human too. Imagine finding maggots and rotten food every time they open a box.
  • Hair can be collected and donated; do not just flush it or throw it with the wet waste.
  • Milk packets can be washed, collected and given for recycling. Don’t cut away the tip. That itself is extremely hazardous to nature.
  • Teach children to segregate waste for a healthy environment. Or else, the day is not far off when we will have to strap on an oxygen cylinder and breathe from it.
