Veteran actress Sukumari no more
Veteran actress Sukumari, who has acted in over 2,500 movies in a career spanning over five decades, passed away on Tuesday (March 26). The 74 year old apparently suffered a heart attack, while recuperating from burns she suffered in an accident in Chennai almost a month ago.
Sukumari amma, as she was fondly known, began her career as a dancer and theatre artists before debuting in Tamil cinema.

The cousin of the Travancore sisters -- Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini -- Sukumari soon became a popular name in Malayalam films as a supporting actress, after which she also made her presence felt in Kannada, Telugu and Hindi cinema, among others. A National Award winner as Best Supporting actress for her turn in the Tamil film Namma Graamam, Padma Sri Sukumari also received the Kerala State Award in the same category several times. In 2005, she was felicitated with the Lifetime Achievement award during the Filmfare (South) awards.
Up until her unfortunate accident, Sukumari continued to be active in cinema, some of her most recent releases being Ayalum Nyaanum Thammil, Trivandrum Lodge and Diamond Necklace, among others.
