Upendra Rao shares his desire to remake his film 'Upendra' in Hindi

Veteran Kannada actor and filmmaker Upendra Rao is basking in the success of his recent film 'UI', which has garnered wide acclaim from fans and critics alike for its unique approach to cinema. The actor recently shared his insights into the rising prominence of Kannada cinema and his plans to remake his 1999 classic film 'Upendra' in Hindi.

In an interview with India Today , the actor highlighted the transformation of Kannada cinema over the years. He discussed how technological advancements and the pan-Indian film trend have revolutionised the industry. He emphasised the shift from low-budget, quick productions—where songs were shot in just three days—to more sophisticated processes that embrace advanced VFX and modern technical innovations.


Upendra commended the concept of pan-Indian cinema for its role in uniting diverse audiences across linguistic barriers, referring to the trend as a pivotal shift in filmmaking. He shared that it allows a filmmaker to create their film in more than five versions simultaneously, catering to a wider audience. According to him, the process is both exciting and challenging.

The actor expressed immense pride in the national recognition that Kannada cinema now enjoys. Reflecting on its growth, he observed that Kannada films are attracting larger audiences these days.

He further reflected on his unfinished Bollywood project with Amitabh Bachchan's production house, explaining that other commitments and a busy schedule with Kannada and Telugu films led him to prioritise focusing on one language at a time.

When asked which of his works he would like to adapt for Hindi audiences, Upendra swiftly pointed to his self-titled film 'Upendra'. “The themes are still relevant today. The futuristic ideas in 'Upendra' continue to engage audiences across generations. It’s a perfect film to be remade in Hindi,” he said.
