He has announced at least three directorials in the recent past and a desire to work with actors like Darshan, Upendra and Shivarajkumar, among others. There's been no word on any of these projects since. Sudeep sets the record straight on what's actually happening. In the past one year, you said you want to direct a film with Shivanna (September 2011), Upendra (December 2011) and the Hindi remake of your own film Only Vishnuvardhana.
You'd also said that Shivanna and you had worked out your schedules for a film. Are any of these projects taking off?
The film with Upendra has been called off. We wanted to make it at a particular point of time, but there were issues with dates that could not be resolved. The proposed film with Shivanna is on hold as I have not got a green signal from him yet. It will happen when it happens. As for the remake of Vishnuvardhana, plans are still on.
So you won't be directing a film anytime soon? There is a project that I want to announce shortly. I will not act in it.
Direction, you said, would require a lot of time. Can you afford to take off that much time? What I have decided to do, once my directorial gets rolling, is to work on that project 10 days of the month, while the rest will be allotted to my acting commitments.
Doesn't this contradict an earlier statement that you don't like to juggle too much work? Taking up more work has been a conscious decision. I need to take care of my family's needs. I have made commitments and some filmmakers have been willing to wait till I found the time to work on their projects. Frankly, by now, I should have been on a different level, financially. That has not happened.
At one point you contemplated quitting acting, apparently unhappy with the work coming to you. Are you happy now? There was a time when the scripts that were exciting were not coming to me. Things have changed since then. I dabbled with comedy in Only Vishnuvardhana, a gamble which paid off. Director Shashank has a script ready for me, Bachchan, which will be one of the next films that I do, once I complete my long-standing commitment to producer Shankar Gowda for his Varadhanayaka. There have been offers from some Telugu producers too. Work is looking better.
But Shashank's last film, Jarasandha, didn't do well at the BO. Are you concerned? There'll be concern only when there is doubt. I believe that one film does not define the talent of a filmmaker. I have no doubt about Shashank's capabilities as a director. He has a good script ready for me.
So are you sticking to your decision of working only with those who really want to work with you and care for you? One of your upcoming projects is by Surappa Babu, who has created trouble with regard to the title of two of your films. The issues with Surappa Babu were never personal. The run-ins he had with the titles (Varadha and Varadhanayaka for instance) were with other people and nothing was ever directed at me. Surappa has made an exciting film like Kottigobba and it would be good to work on the sequel.
During the promotions of Just Maath Mathalli (JMM), you and Ramya had very public spats. You've been tweeting to each other nearly three years later. It's impossible to remain angry forever. There was a silence of three years between Ramya and me and then, recently, she uploaded a picture of us during the making of JMM, which I thought was a nice gesture. So, I responded. But just because we are tweeting to each other does not mean that we are good pals and holding hands.
