Simple Suni talks about the five filmmakers who inspire him

Filmmaker Suni, popularly known as Simple Suni, after his debut film Simplag Ondu Love Story, is known for his witty dialogues and writing style. He has worked with both stars and newcomers alike. In this episode of #QuickTakesWithBangaloreTimes, he talks to us about the filmmakers who inspire him...

1. Puttanna Kanagal
He is a legend and is like Dronacharya to all of us filmmakers who have learnt the art by watching his movies. He has worked on multiple themes and his film Manasa Sarovara is my personal favourite. I feel the subject of the film is such that it could be remade in Hollywood too. All his films were experimental in that era and he has set a benchmark that is unparalleled in Kannada cinema.

2. Vijay
His filmography can make one envious, as it contains some of the best names. Mayura, Auto Raja, Sanadhi Appana and Srinivasa Kalyana are some of the films that he did. He's made films across different genres and excelled in those. This is why he ranks high on my list of favourite filmmakers.

3. Shankar Nag
I love all the films that he has made. He was a thinker and a visionary. His experiments were amazing and Malgudi Days by him, is everyone's favourite. He also knew how to work well within a budget and yet showcase his vision. His feat of filming the first ever underwater sequence in Ondu Muttina Kathe is remarkable.

SS Rajamouli

He knows how to make films on a grand scale and engage viewers. And yet, the core idea of these larger than life narratives that he makes is a simple story. This is what makes me look at him with awe. Look at Baahubali for example, it is a spectacle.

5. Rajkumar Hirani
He's never seen defeat at the box office. He uses the LCD formula in his films - laugh, cry and drama. He captures each of these emotions beautifully and this is the reason why he has seen the success that he has. He has learnt the art of balancing commercial films with social messages.
