The superhit Kannada film Janumada Jodi, which was released in 1996, completes 24 years since its release. The Shivarajkumar and Chippy starrer, directed by TS Nagabharana, was based on the Gujarati novel Malela Jeev written by Pannalal Patil.
Janumada Jodi was a major break in Shivarajkumar's career, remaining in theatres for a whole year in several regions like Hubballi, Belagavi, Mysuru, Vijaypura and Bengaluru. Shivarajkumar played the role of an innocent village guy
Krishna, Mollywood actress Chippy, for whom this was her Kannada film debut, was Kanaka, Enagli Balappa was Swami,
Pavitra Lokesh was Mani, Rajeev was Singarigowda, while Mukyamantri Chandru was Tammadi. Actors Honnavali Krishna, Karibasavaiah, Mandya Ramesh,
Arun Sagar
and Krishnegowda were also seen in prominent roles. The film went on to win multiple accolades, with Chippy winning a state award and Filmfare award for Best Actress. While it won Best film at Filmfare awards, the late
Parvathamma Rajkumar received special jury award as the producer of the film at the year’s state film awards. V
Manohar received best music director at both award events.
In fact, one of the songs from the film, Kolumande Jangama, penned by Doddarange Gowda continues to be popular across
Karnataka. Some of the other songs from the movie like, Mani Mani, which has been picturised on a bullock is also remembered by audiences even today.
