The programme organized by the Information Department, to mark Dr Rajkumar's 85th birthday on April 24 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, took a bad turn when the audience objected to music director-singer Gurukiran Shetty's renditions. The evening began with a musical tribute to the legendary actor and as a part of that, Gurukiran went on stage to sing some memorable songs of Dr Rajkumar.

Guru's first rendition was the song Love Me Or Hate Me from the film Shankar Guru. However, since he sang it in a a slightly different style, people began murmuring that the song was not in good taste and that Gurukiran must sing it similar to the original.
While the first song managed to finish in peace, Guru's second rendition, Endendu Ninnanu Marethu, witnessed strong objecting. The audience even urged him to sing the song as it is. Meanwhile, the legendary actor's son Shivarajkumar, who was one of the guests, intervened and supported Gurukiran's singing by saying that it is an experiment and the singer did not intend to change or dishonour the song.
Later however, Gurukiran, noting the disappointed audience, apologized and said that he wanted to sing in a different style and had no intentions of degrading Dr Rajkumar's songs.
