The success of the Tulu film Oriyadori Asal, which starred Likith Shetty and Ramya Barna in lead roles, seems to have helped push Tulu cinema to the next level. The film, which ran for 175 days, has opened opportunities for several aspiring actors. The onscreen outing seems to have also put the lead actors in demand. In fact, Ramya has signed her second film in Tulu with the makers of Oriyadori. The film, titled
Madhume (marriage), is scripted and directed by Vijaykumar Kodeabali, who had previously scripted
Oriyadori. Its a woman-oriented story that talks about what goes into the concept of wedding. From bonding with family and friends, dealing with emotional difficulties even in the midst of fun and laughter the film is about all that happens during a wedding, says Ramya.
Madhume stars two other newcomers playing lead roles. The crew is expected to begin shoot in Mangalore this January.
Talking about her association with Tulu cinema, Ramya says, Since Kannada is my mother tongue, Ive always been comfortable working in Kannada films. When I was offered
Oriyadori, I was skeptical about taking it up. I havent seen the play (
Oriyadori was based on a famous Tulu play with the same name). I took it up since the script was great. I was thrilled to see it do so well, so much so that it has helped the Tulu film industry get right back on track.
Now that Ramyas taking up more films in the industry, she hopes to be able to learn the language as well. Learning Tulu was one of my top resolutions this year, she says, adding, The theatre scene in Mangalore is vibrant. A lot of people watch Tulu plays that feature so many talented actors. However, the Tulu film industry requires more support from the government as well as from the members of the Kannada film industry. It would be great if Tulu films can release in other parts of Karnataka too.
