Actors and technicians from the Kannada film industry seem to be slowly making their way to other industries as well. The industry, which was till recently restricted to just
Sandalwood, is now carving their name in not only other south Indian film industries but in Bollywood as well.
Many actors and technicians like
Girish Karnad,
Ananthnag, Shankarnag,
Puttanna Kanagal, SV Rajendra Singh Babu,
Suresh URS,
Upendra and others were active in different languages during the 70s and 80s. But, by the end of the century, the number of Kannadigas working in other industries came down and they were confined to only Kannada films. Later however, actors like
Bhavana and
Daisy Bopanna made brief appearances in Hindi films but they failed to make an impact.
But now things seem to be changing gradually. The change started with
Sudeep being cast by
Ram Gopal Varma in Hindi film Phoonkh a few years back and went on to do Phoonkh 2, Rann and Raktacharitra. Next it was
Nidhi Subbaiah who made it to Bombay and recently stunt director,
Ravi Verma, directed some action sequences for a
Prabhudeva film in Bollywood. Cameraman Santhosh Rai Pathaje worked for a Telugu film, art director Shashidhar Adapa worked for Maniratnam’s Kadal and director
Yogaraj Bhat went directed a Bollywood film called Helmet.
