The Kannada superstar, God to his fans, Puneeth Rajkumar would be 48 today had he lived. 46 is no age to go, especially for someone who was so special. Large-hearted, charitable to a fault, and a guiding light for the entire Kannada film industry, Puneeth’s death was a loss beyond any measure to the Kannada film industry. During his lifetime he appeared in only 32 films, both as a child and an adult. Every film has infinite recall value for its fans.
Tamil star Vishal Krishna gets emotional recalling the Kannada star. “Puneeth and I had worked together in a film. Ever since then, we remained very close friends. His death shocked everyone. He was not just a superstar on screen, but a big star in real life as well. He looked after hundreds of homes, funded numerous surgeries and children’s education. When I got to know about the 1800 students whom he sponsored I decided to take over the responsibility.”
At a function to felicitate Puneeth Rajkumar posthumously, RRR’s superstar NTR Jr had said, “If there is a king who has won a kingdom simply by his character and smile, without ego and without being egoistic, without waging a battle, it is the one and only Sri Puneeth Rajkumar. He was Karnataka's legitimate superstar, a great son, a great spouse, a great friend, a great father, a fantastic actor, a dancer, a singer, and, most importantly, a great human being. I've never seen a richer smile than his. Today he is receiving Karnataka Rathna, but in my opinion, and please do not misinterpret me, Puneeth Rajkumar is the epitome of Karnataka Rathna.”
KGF’s phenomenal Kannada star Yash had posted a heartfelt tribute to Puneeth Rajkumar on his birth anniversary last year: “The smile that never fades, the warmth which can never be matched, An Energy which can never be stopped, A Power which can never be taken away..He lives on.”
The smile will never cease to enthrall his devotees in Kannada cinema who hero worship Puneeth Rajkumar beyond any human description of adulation. The legend lives.
