My film is a celebration of youth: K V Guhan

Director K V Guhan, whose Inidhu Inidhu is all set to hit the screens, tells TOI that his film is a celebration of youth
My film is a celebration of youth: K V Guhan
Director K V Guhan strongly believes in the movie quote from Forrest Gump, Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get. Its this conviction that has landed the director in the place that he is today. The man who has always dreamt of becoming a filmmaker can finally give himself a pat on his back, as he has achieved his cherished dream.

Yes, he is kicked about the way his directorial debut Inidhu Inidhu, a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Happy Days, has shaped up.
The film is a celebration of youth. We have retained the essence of the original, but have made a few changes to suit the Tamil audience. Before I started the film, I had a preliminary discussion with Shekhar Kammula, the director of Happy Days. I wanted to include all those elements that Shekhar might have missed in the original. But then, I realised that he hadnt left out anything important. Soon, I started scouting for new faces to give that fresh look. Barring Sonia, who was also a part of the original, the entire young brigade is new, begins Guhan excitedly.
A sought-after cinematographer, Guhan says that hes getting addicted to his new role as a director. When I was just cranking the camera, I didnt realise that direction was such a big responsibility. The director has to literally put his heart and soul into the film. Im glad that I have donned the directors cap at the right time.
Now that his dream has come true, will cinematography take a backseat? Not really. I agree that I have got a great launch pad with this film, but I will not put cinematography on the backburner. I think there are more doors opening for film people to explore different avenues. For a cinematographer or an actor, its easier to don the directors cap as they interact closely with the director during a shoot. I would like balance direction and cinematography.
So, was it difficult to handle a team of freshers? It was a challenge, but I thoroughly enjoyed the process. We trained all the youngsters by conducting acting workshops. Prakash Raj, director Radha Mohan and actor Kumaravel oversaw the process. I was a strict teacher on the sets and nothing less than Hitler. The actors too took their parts seriously and have come up with a great performance. Though I shot the film using an all-new star cast, nowhere during the making of the film, was the process a burden.

So, what kind of films is Guhan planning to craft in the future? Im a lover of films and watch all genres. I want to make something on the lines of Tom Hankss Cast Away. I also admire Steven Spielberg, Ram Gopal Varma and Gautham Vasudev Menon for their spellbinding cinema. As of now, Im keeping my fingers crossed for Inidhu Inidhu. I would like to take it slow and steady and enjoy every moment of being a cinematographer and a director.
