Adding a feather to her cap this new year is Kannada director Suman Kittur, who features among the top 10 most important contemporary women directors of the Indian Subcontinent. Suman is the only Kannada director who features among the likes of Rubaiyat Hossain, Shonali Bose, Mehreen Jabbar, Ooruvazi Irani, Meghana Gulzar, Manju Borah, Satarupa Sanyal, Zoya Akthar and Bobby Sharma Baruah.I was identified by film curators, like Premendra Mazumdar, who have helped me reach out to audiences beyond India. My last film, Edegaarike, was screened at as many as 25 film festivals, even though it was a commercial film and not the usual art fare that is often screened at festivals. I have made so many friends across the globe now, thanks to them having watched Edegaarike and thereby starting a conversation with me, says Suman, who has been working on her film Kiragoorina Gayyaligalu that stars Shwetha Srivastav.
Suman adds, It is an honour to be featured on such a list and so good to see a forum, like Asian cinema, supporting women directors.
