I’m casting before I write again: Thithi director Raam on his next
Bengaluru filmmaker Raam Reddy known for his Berlin 2024 title Jugnuma: The Fable and his Locarno-winning debut Thithi (2015), is moving forward with his third feature, Lavender Fire, a coming-of-age drama set in Mumbai’s modelling and influencer scene. “I’ve gone back to my roots in terms of process. I’m once again casting non-actors like I did with Thithi, and I’m casting before I write. That approach leads to a lot of authenticity. By design, writing is going to be the final step of pre-production. Spontaneity is a core part of this project. The only way to be that free-flowing in a medium like cinema is to collect everything you have and then use it in your writing, rather than the other way around,” he says.
‘A high-energy, ultimately feel-good film’
The film centres on three siblings in their 20s navigating modern Mumbai. “It’ll be a high-energy, feel-good film that remains non-judgmental about the social worlds it explores,” says Raam.
