Singer turned actor Chaithra J Achar tells us she blindly agreed to play a role in actor-director Raj B Shetty’s upcoming film Toby. “If Raj wants me to play a role, I will just do it. I did not ask him what the role was about at all, I just said yes. That’s the kind of trust I have in him. In fact, I think every artiste should work with Raj at least once,” she says.
However, this rule does not necessarily apply to other projects that she takes up. “If the writing is strong, there will be space for an actor to perform. So, as an actor, I would love to explore anything that comes my way, provided that the role has something big to do with the film. I don’t expect to be on screen throughout the film. Even a five-minute role should have an important part to play. Otherwise, even if the film is by a big production house, I would politely decline the offer.
Cinema is art, irrespective of language. At times, people do not see the craft for what it is and insist on language preference. For instance, I am a Kannadiga, and nobody can take that away from me. But what I do not understand is when people insist actors must speak only their mother tongue or a particular language or even work in a particular industry alone. We must understand that it is the craft that comes first

I’m flattered when people tell me I resemble Alia Bhatt. I really look up to her. She is a beautiful woman, so when people call me Alia, I think they are calling me beautiful. I wish someday, people tell Alia that she looks like Chaithra

People react weirdly when an actor goes to work in another industry. I think it comes from a place of ignorance. I think it’s a great thing when actors go out and explore other film industries
