The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards may have been a celebration of the best that Hollywood and American television has to offer, but it was also an evening when the presenters seemed to have a ball. We bring you some of the zingers — and some of the lines that fell flat — at this year’s edition of the Globes.TINA FEY Tina Fey and
Amy Poehler returned as co-hosts for the Globes and their opening monologue saw them take digs at pretty much everyone in the room.
When Tina spoke about Gravity, she said, “It’s the story of how
George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”
AMY POEHLER Amy got the most laughs when she came onstage dressed in a tux and when Tina introduced her as “my adult son from a previous relationship, Randy”. ‘Randy’, who was this year’s Mr Golden Globes 2014, then proceeded to go from table to table, trying to figure out who his ‘father’ was, and even asked Tina if it was either actor
Idris Elba or producer
Harvey Weinstein.
MATT DAMON Matt Damon — who was smarting from being called no better than a “garbage person” by Tina and Amy, considering the star lineup at the event made him “not a big deal”— jocularly referred to himself as “a
garbage man who didn’t bring his glasses” when he came onstage to introduce the trailer for Captain Phillips.
ROBERT DOWNEY JR RDJ brought his trademark fast-talking sarcasm onstage when he presented the best actress nominees. He named each of the nominees by saying, “If Amy (Adams) takes it and I get a racy photo of us backstage, Gucci lets me keep the tux... If it’s (
Julia Louis-Dreyfus), I chat her up and ride her coattails straight into Tina (Fey)’s after-party....”
DIANE KEATON Diane Keaton accepted the
Cecil B. DeMille on behalf of good friend
Woody Allen and she came dressed the part — in a tux that was a throwback to Woody’s earlier films. She also signed off by singing the Girl Scout song Make New Friends (But Keep the Old).
EMMA THOMPSON Emma Thompson is known for her eccentric acceptance speeches, and now she’s gained the rep of being an eccentric presenter. She came onstage to present the Best Screenplay barefoot, with her shoes in one hand and a drink in another — and then threw aside her footwear when she was presented the envelope with the winner’s name.
