Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad and BJP MP Prathap Simha have reportedly received death threats on social media as the controversy rages in the state over the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan. Karnad was speaking at a state government-organised Tipu Jayanti event where he said that it would have been “apt“ had the Bengaluru International Airport a Devanahalli been named afte Tipu Sultan rather than
Kempe Gowda.
Karnad received a threat on Twitte that he would meet the same fate as rationalist MM Kalburg who was gunned down by two men at his residence in Dharwad recently. Security has been posted at the resi dence of Karnad after he received the threats.
Many took offence to Karnad's remarks, including members of the Vokkaliga community that Kempe Gowda belongs to, right-wing outfit and the state BJP leadership. A tweet posted on the Twitte handle `Intolerant Chandra reportedly said that Karnad will meet the same fate as Kalburgi if he enrages Kannadigas with such comments. A senior police official said they have received information about a post and are looking into the matter.
In the meantime, BJP MP Prathap Simha also received a threat on Facebook. Simha approached police on Tuesday complaining of a post threatening dire consequences for him for his remarks over the Madikeri incident which claimed the life of the local VHP leader Kuttappa. Simha had questioned the government and the police version that Kuttappa had died in a fall while jumping a boundary wall. The Lok Sabha MP has been severely critical of Tipu Sultan amidst claims of `persecution' suffered by Hindus under his reign.
The post on Facebook page `Mysuru Tiger Shahide Millat Mahan Tippu Sultan' allegedly shows Simha's photograph next to that of Kuttappa and threatens him with the same fate as the VHP leader if he continues to play politics by making `anti-Muslim comments'.
Mysuru police said that the cyber crime division has been asked to look into the matter.
