From 'KGF' to 'Mufti': Kannada action movies to watch during the quarantine

‘KGF: Chapter 1’ was one of the biggest action movies in 2018. The movie was released in 5 different languages including Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil. The movie became popular because of its action sequences. It is also the first Kannada movie to release in Pakistan and other countries. The story is about the KGF goldfield and how the protagonist occupies the KGF goldfield for power. The movie earned more than Rs 250 crore across the world. The mass and class looks of Yash, the story, the cinematography and other things attracted people. The movie was directed by Prashanth Neel.

‘Tagaru’ was one of the biggest commercial hits of 2018, directed and written by Duniya Soori. This movie was produced by KP Srikanth, with a Rs 11 crore budget. It went off to collect Rs 10 crore in 3 days and ran for 100 days in 15 theatres across Karnataka. It also became the first Kannada movie to release in Kenya and Japan. The movie became a successful action drama because of its story, the action done by Shiva Rajkumar and the villains Dhananjay and Vasishta N Simha. The movie has great stunts too. Charan Raj composed music for it.


'Kaddipudi' was another amazing action drama directed by Duniya Soori, starring Shivarajkumar and Radhika Pandith in lead roles. The 2013 movie is about a goon who reluctantly enters the underworld but later chooses to leave it all behind and takes a vow to put an end to crime and lead a regular life. But, his past catches up with him and in turn, the plot gives the audience some amazing action sequences.


'Ugramm' was also one of the best action super hit movies in Sandalwood which raised the bar in the action-thriller genre. This 2014 film, directed by Prashanth Neel and starring Srimurali and Haripriya, was the first Kannada film to release in Tokyo and saw a decent opening in the USA, UK and Southeast Asia. In Karnataka, it ran for 100 days. It is believed that it was the film's screenplay that attracted the audience.


8MM starred Jaggesh and Vasishta N Simha in lead roles. The 2018 movie created huge expectations in Kannada audience, but after the release, it was revealed that it was a remake of the Tamil movie ‘8 Thottakkal’. Even though it was a remake, the film had its own strengths. Jaggesh played a different and unique role in the movie. It is a story of a police officer who loses his gun and lands up as a common man. He uses the gun to rob the bank and kills several people.


‘Mufti’ was a neo-noir action thriller directed by Narthan and starring Shivarajkumar, Srii Murali and Shanvi Srivastav in lead roles. Narthan, who made his debut in Sandalwood with this 2017 film, gave a good performance. Shivarajkumar played the underworld boss and Srii Murali was the cop. Shivarajkumar played the strong role in the movie, where he showed a different shade of his acting skills. The movie was also remade in Tamil starring Silambarasan and Gautham Karthik.
