Mysore-based wildlife filmmakers Krupakar and Senani talk about their days with Veerappan as recounted in their book....
Krupakar: Emotions are there in the animalsociety. You just have to document them. It is about becoming one with yoursubject; experiencing the ups and downs through them will naturally breathe lifeinto the work.Senani: The Pack is our life-time passion; it wasnta conscious effort to strike a balance. It was about telling our own story. Theworld of wildlife documentary filmmaking has evolved from the simpleillustrative type to strong, artistic story-telling, hidden in which areadvanced scientific discoveries and complex behaviours.Krupakar: Saving a species and its habitatare entirely different from saving an individual. The greedy human leaves behindonly graves. But the next generation would want to know the history of thegraves.Senani: On the bigger canvas, the human has his place too. But lifecan be horrible on a lonely planet without other living beings that youotherwise take for granted.Krupakar: Actually, we were in our own territory. Freeforest camping, with armed guards for security.Senani: Waiting for deathcould be worse than death itself.
Ignoring death is life... honestly, it isKrupas attitude of seeing the good and humourous side of a story in anysituation that made the whole experienceinteresting.Senani: Kennai was our heroine. I knew her thirdhusbands great grandfather too. They are the greatest survivors I know.Today they are dead, but their genes live on. Krupakar: This world isfull of mysteries. Only, I should have been born a little later to have had alittle more time to understand more of this amazing world!Krupakar: Its sacrifice at one level, butselfishness at another. Even a passionate journey can be selfish. Sacrifice isjust a journey. Senani: The trophies are sitting in the cupboard, but theamazing experiences we went through are the real rewards that way we arevery rich.
Krupakar-Senani: We got lost in a conservation movement for along time. By the time we got back on track and went looking for the lens totell our next story, it was filled with fungus and the vision is blurred at themoment.
